Celebrate Día de los Muertos at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian

Celebrate Día de los Muertos with performances by Latin Grammy-winning all-women mariachi group Flor de Toloache. Visit ofrendas made by Indigenous artists, enjoy food and drinks, take part in all-ages hand-on activities, and dance to local DJ Kristy la rAt. 

Hands-on activities include painting sugar skull magnets and crafting paper marigolds and masks to share or wear throughout the evening.

Visit the Mitsitam Cafe for a special Dia de los Muertos menu. Bite-sized food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the museum.

FAQs for the screening of Coco

How much are tickets?
illumiNATIONS: Dia de los Muertos Party and the screening of Coco are free and open to the public, but tickets are required—one ticket per person for entry, including children. Tickets to the screening of Coco are booked separately, but do include access to the illumiNATIONS party. 
Where do I enter the museum?
For the screening of Coco, guests will enter the museum via the Group Entrance at Maryland Avenue and 4th Street beginning at 6 PM. The Rasmuson Theater doors will open at this time. 
What do I need to check in?
All guests will check in with museum staff upon arrival. Please have your confirmation order and the name the tickets were booked under. For ease of entry, if you reserved multiple tickets please have all guests check in together. Those registered for the screening of Coco will receive wristbands at check in so they can come and go from the screening. 
Can I eat during the film?
No food or drinks are permitted in the Rasmuson Theater apart from bottled water. Food and drinks will be available for purchase in the museum beginning at 6:30 PM. Please enjoy your snacks outside of the Theater. 
Can I reserve seating in the Rasmuson Theater?
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited reserved seating will be available for NMAI Members. The Rasmuson Theater does have accessible seating, if you need accessible seating or seating for a companion, email SupportNMAI@si.edu 
Will I be able to join the illumiNATIONS party after attending the screening of Coco?
Yes! Tickets to the screening of Coco include access to illumiNATIONS.

Can I come to just the party and not the screening of Coco?
Yes! Regular admission tickets to illumiNATIONS: Dia de los Muertos are for the party. Separate tickets are required for the screening of Coco.

Will there be food and drinks at illumiNATIONS?

Bite-size food and drinks will be available to purchase from the Mitsitam Cafe and Coffee Bar and on the 4th Floor. See above for our specialty Dia de los Muertos menu! Guests must be 21+ with a valid ID to purchase alcohol. 

Ilegal Mezcal will be offering mezcal samples while supplies last and sharing how their mezcal is produced in Oaxaca México. 
Do you have any benefits for NMAI Members?
Members will receive a discount on all purchases from the museum stores and from the Mitsitam Cafe. 
Can I dress up for the party?
For Security purposes, some costume elements are not permitted in the museum such as masks that entirely cover the face, weapons, tools, placards, signs, and banners. The Day of the Dead is a festival celebrated by people in Mexico, parts of Central and South America, and many Latino communities across the United States as a way to honor family and friends who have passed away. The tradition originates from the Indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica, including the Mexica (Aztec) and Maya. Please keep in mind that Dia de los Muertos is not Mexican Halloween.
Can't make it to illumiNATIONS but still want to celebrate Día de los Muertos?
Celebrate with free family-friendly music, dance, and hands-on activities on Saturday & Sunday, November 2 & 3, at the museum’s Día de los Muertos Festival! No registration is required.
